An Introduction to Definitions and Concepts
Transgender refers to people who’s gender identity differs from cultural expectations for the sex (male or female) they were assigned at birth. For short, the word ‘trans’ is often used.
You will sometimes see or hear the concept of male to female (MTF) or female to male (FTM), when talking about people who are transgender. This further identifies how one transitioned. Transitioning has many layers and can be quite complex. Transitioning can take years and looks different for everyone as one looks to align their gender identity with their biology. Other terms to know are: Trans Male and Trans Female.
One should understand that many transgender folks identify as the gender they ‘transitioned’ to. And for all intents and purposes identify as male or female - not necessarily Trans Male or Trans Female.
