An Introduction to Definitions and Concepts
Now that we’ve covered the meaning of the letters LGBTQ+, let’s define sexual orientation and gender identity. We’ll first start with sexual orientation.
Sexual orientation is an emotional, romantic or sexual attraction to people. Everyone has a sexual orientation of some sort that is typically seen as homosexual, heterosexual, bisexual, asexual or pansexual.
Homosexuality is having sexual, emotional, and/or romantic attraction to the same sex or gender.
Heterosexuality is having sexual, emotional, and/or romantic attraction to the opposite sex or gender.
Bisexuality is having sexual, emotional, and/or romantic attraction to two sexes or genders, and not necessarily at the same time or at the same level.
Asexuality is the absence of sexual, emotional and/or romantic attraction to any sex or gender.
Pansexuality is having fluidity in sexual, emotional and/or romantic attraction to sexes or genders.
